HYDRA ISLAND GREECE

HYDRA BY AREA
a guide to property location on the island

Hydra is a small island - its maximum length, northeast–southwest, is 13 miles (21 km), and it has an area of only 19.2 sq miles (49.6 sq km). The population is concentrated on the western side of the island. The other side of Hydra remains untouched and no road leads there. Mountains run down the central spine of the island, the highest point being 590 metres.

For Real Estate purposes the island can be divided into 6 areas in order of most densely populated :

1. Hydra town and Kiafa
2. Four Corners
3. Kaminia village
4. Vlychos
5. Mandraki

1. Hydra town
is the area surrounding the main harbour of the island where all boats and ferries dock. Here you will find the main shopping center, banks, police dept, hospital, pharmacies, etc. Most waterfront property here is taken up with commercial lets, but houses do come on the market from time to time. The most populated area is Kiafa, which is high up above the port and is the oldest residential area of the town. People choose Kiafa because it affords good views. Those who wish to avoid stairs, look for property in the flat town area. PROPERTY OF THE MONTH - HYDRA TOWN

2. Four Corners
is the friendly name given to the area that saddles a plateau between Hydra town and Kaminia village and for our purposes – encompasses all properties either side of the square with grocery shops known as “4 corners”. Houses here are generally to be found in a cheaper price bracket as they do not all have views of the sea. There is a real “village” atmosphere here and this is where the American poet Leonard Cohen has a home. PROPERTY OF THE MONTH - 4 CORNERS

3. Kaminia Village
has a different ambience altogether from the hustle and bustle of Hydra town, yet they are only 10 minutes apart. You can reach Kamina village on foot via the coastal road or take the steep stepped short cut through “4 Corners”.  Kaminia is a fishing village with a picturesque marina and houses here enjoy views all the way to Spetses.  It is a peaceful village with grocery shops, 5 tavernas, a school (ages 3-12) and Castello Beach very popular for swimming. Property in this area is on the rise as people wish to escape the noise of the main port and be closer to the sea.

4. Vlychos
is a holiday home area with houses mainly of new construction all close to the sea. There is a large grey pebble beach, one taverna and one café. It is approximately 15 minutes walk from Kaminia village. Taxi boats are available to transport residents here to Hydra town or it can be a 40 minute walk along the coastal path.

5. Mandraki
is a small neighbourhood settled around a beautiful bay that lies to the North of Hydra town. It is approximately thirty minutes walk from Hydra town along the coastal road. There are a few newly built villas along the road. The bay features the MiraMare hotel with a bar/cafeteria.

Outer areas : There are a few properties around the farming settlement of Episkopi and the Bay of Molos further down the South coast. There are no shops or restaurants in these settlements and Molos is not easily reached by foot, you really need a boat or to use the water taxis. If you are interested in this area please enquire.
